Number 10: The Gruta do Lago Azul When a strange forest is being explored, it’s inevitable that something mysterious will pop up. But this entry is rather more beautiful than strange. Back in 1924, a local stumbled across this mysterious cave while scouting a rainforest in Bonito, Brazil. Inside the cave was a crystal-blue lake later dubbed the Gruta do Lago Azul. This lake soon became one of the largest flooded cavities on the entire planet. Its heavenly look is already very clear to the eye. But that blue color is not of the water itself. Instead, it comes from the sunlight through the ceiling holes of the cave. The lake, however, is believed to be over 200 feet deep and fed by an underground river yet to be discovered. Thinking that they would find some answer to the question, a group of experts dived into the lake in the 1970s. They were not prepared for what they would find though. At the bottom of the lake lies thousands of prehistoric animal bones. This isn’t superman so let’s get serious. This huge ball is an emerald stone. If you’ve not seen its raw form before, then you will be forgiven to think it’s a rock from Krypton in Smallville. This particular one, however, is from our planet Earth, from the Brazilian Carnaiba mine to be precise. It was discovered in 2017 by a group of miners hoping to have their big break. And there it was, a 794-pound, 4.3 feet emerald stone staring right at them after digging 656 feet into the ground. To bring it up to the surface, it took 10 strong men a full week. Tedious, yes, but at least it was worth the stress. After it was secretly auctioned, the emerald was bought by an individual who, for security reasons, refused to disclose his identity or how much he bought it. But according to Forbes, the specimen has 180,000 carats of emerald beryls in total. Given the rarity and the whopping amount of tiny beryls within it, the emerald’s worth at least $309 million. But we think it’s just fair to put this slippery snake-like creature at the ugliest end of the spectrum. In the scientific world, it’s called Atretochoana eiselti. When it was first discovered in an Amazon river back in 1968, it was better known as “The Man-aconda” due to its uncanny similarities to… a part of the … uhm… male anatomy! Very rude indeed but that’s how Mother Nature chose to surprise us this time. But despite the name, this smutty serpent is no snake at all. Instead, it’s among a special type of amphibians called Caecilians. And this particular species is among the rarest of the rare. The only confirmed sighting after its 1968 discovery was in 2012 when an energy company intended to build a dam over the Madeira River. Of all them, the Bulbostylis paradoxa or should we say the Fire plant outstand the rest. It was recently discovered by scientists from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2019. They were studying the effects of the increasing wildfires on the biodiversity of Cerrado. To achieve their aim, they set-up a controlled fire on a particular hotspot of plant species in the savannah. The fire as expected burnt everything to the ground.
